Falaises de la côte vicentine sur la Rota Vicentina — randonnée Algarve Portugal

The Fishermen’s Trail self-guided is one of the world’s great coastal walks : 220 km of Atlantic cliffs, empty beaches and authentic fishing villages along Portugal’s wild southwest coast. Pura Evasão is a local agency based in Faro, in the heart of the Algarve, and we have been organising self-guided hiking holidays on the Rota Vicentina for years. We know this trail from end to end. Our packages include a detailed English roadbook, GPS tracks, private en-suite accommodation with breakfast, and real local support — not a call centre.

Why Hike the Fishermen’s Trail?

The Fishermen’s Trail runs along the Atlantic coast of southwest Portugal, from Porto Covo in the Alentejo all the way to Lagos in the Algarve. It crosses the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park — the most unspoiled stretch of coastline in Western Europe. Dramatic sea cliffs, red sand dunes, white storks nesting on sea stacks, wild orchids in spring, and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace. Whether you walk the full route or choose a shorter section, every stage delivers.

Why Book Your Rota Vicentina Holiday With a Local Agency?

Most self-guided hiking packages on the Fishermen’s Trail are sold by companies based in Ireland, the UK or Northern Europe. We are not one of them.

Pura Evasão is based in Faro, in the Algarve — a few kilometres from the southern end of the Rota Vicentina. That means we know the terrain, the best guesthouses at each stage, the weather patterns, and the local suppliers we trust. When something unexpected happens on the trail, you reach someone who knows the area. We are also an official partner of the Rota Vicentina Association, working directly with the organisation that maintains and develops the trail network.

You also benefit from full English-language support at every stage of your trip, from planning to the final day.

Fishermen’s Trail FAQ — Everything You Need to Know

What is the best time of year to hike the Fishermen’s Trail? Spring (March to June) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons. The trail is walkable year-round, but July and August bring intense heat, crowded paths and accommodation that books out weeks in advance. March and April are exceptional for wildflowers on the cliffs.

How fit do I need to be to walk the Rota Vicentina? Good general fitness is required, but no technical skills. The main challenges are the long stages on soft sand and the cliff ascents. Most walkers with a regular hiking practice complete the trail comfortably. We recommend building up to 15 to 20 km walks before you go.

Can I hike just part of the Fishermen’s Trail? Yes. There is no obligation to walk the full 220 km. We build tailor-made itineraries from any starting point — 5 days, 8 days, 12 days, depending on your time and fitness. The Algarve section from Odeceixe to Lagos is a popular choice for a first experience of the trail.

What is the difference between the Fishermen’s Trail and the Serra to Coast? The Fishermen’s Trail is the classic coastal route of the Rota Vicentina — Porto Covo to Lagos, entirely along the Atlantic. The Serra to Coast is an exclusive itinerary designed by Pura Evasão that starts in the mountains above the Algarve and descends to the Vicentine coast — combining two completely different landscapes in a single nine-day walk.

Is luggage transfer available on the Fishermen’s Trail? Yes, as an optional add-on. Your bags travel ahead to the next guesthouse while you walk with a light daypack. It makes a significant difference on long sandy stages.

Can I do the Fishermen’s Trail alone? Absolutely. Our self-guided packages are well suited to solo travellers. The trail is clearly waymarked throughout. You walk at your own pace with a full roadbook, GPS tracks and our local team available whenever you need us.
