The Rota Vicentina is a 400 km network of waymarked trails in southwest Portugal, between the Alentejo and the Algarve. It covers three main routes: the Fishermen’s Trail, the Historical Way, and around twenty circular day hikes. The entire network runs through the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, the most unspoiled stretch of coastline in Western Europe.

What you will find: dramatic sea cliffs, red sand dunes, white storks, wild orchids in spring, authentic fishing villages.

Pura Evasão organises self-guided hiking trips on the Rota Vicentina from Faro, in the Algarve. Local agency, official partner of the Rota Vicentina and Via Algarviana.

Rota Vicentina Hiking FAQ — Everything You Need to Know

Rota Vicentina Hiking FAQ

What is the best time to hike the Rota Vicentina?

Spring (March–June) and autumn (September–November). July–August: intense heat, crowded trails, fully booked accommodation.

How fit do I need to be for the Fishermen’s Trail?

Good general fitness is required, no technical skills needed. We recommend training on 15 to 20 km walks before departure.

Can I walk just part of the trail?

Yes. We build tailor-made itineraries from any starting point — 5, 8 or 12 days depending on your availability.

What is the difference between the Fishermen’s Trail and the Historical Way?

The Fishermen’s Trail follows the Atlantic coast from Porto Covo to Lagos. The Historical Way crosses the rural interior through traditional villages and cork oak forests.

What is the Serra to Coast?

An exclusive itinerary designed by Pura Evasão, from Monchique to Lagos. The only mountain-to-sea crossing in the Algarve. It does not exist anywhere else.

Is luggage transfer available?

Yes, as an option on all our itineraries. Your bags travel ahead to the next stage while you walk with a light daypack.

Can I hike the Rota Vicentina alone?

Yes. Our self-guided trips are well suited to solo travellers. The trail is fully waymarked. You walk with a complete roadbook, GPS tracks and our local team available whenever you need us.

How long does it take to walk the full Fishermen’s Trail?

The Fishermen’s Trail covers 226 km from Porto Covo to Lagos. Allow 12 to 14 days for the full route. Shorter sections are available — we build tailor-made itineraries based on your schedule.

Is accommodation pre-booked?

Yes. All accommodation is confirmed before your departure. In high season, the most popular guesthouses fill up quickly. We recommend booking at least 2 to 3 months in advance.

What is the difference between self-guided and guided hiking?

On a self-guided trip you walk at your own pace with a detailed roadbook, GPS tracks and our remote support. A guided trek includes a local guide walking with you every day. We offer both options.
