Rota Vicentina hiking spans over 400 km of trails in southwest Portugal, between the Alentejo and the Algarve. The network includes several routes: the Fishermen’s Trail, the iconic 226.5 km coastal path from Porto Covo to Lagos, the Historical Way which crosses the rural hinterland, and around twenty circular day hikes.

The entire network runs through the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, the most unspoiled stretch of coastline in Western Europe. Dramatic sea cliffs, red sand dunes, white storks nesting on sea stacks, wild orchids in spring, and fishing villages where life still moves at its own pace. Whether you walk the full route or choose a shorter section, every stage delivers.

Pura Evasão organises self-guided trips on three routes: the Fishermen’s Trail, the Historical Way, and the Serra to Coast, an exclusive mountain-to-sea itinerary designed by our team. Contact us to build your trip.

Why Book Your Rota Vicentina Holiday With a Local Agency?

Most self-guided hiking packages on the Fishermen’s Trail are sold by companies based in Ireland, the UK or Northern Europe. We are not one of them.

Pura Evasão is based in Faro, in the Algarve — a few kilometres from the southern end of the Rota Vicentina. That means we know the terrain, the best guesthouses at each stage, the weather patterns, and the local suppliers we trust. When something unexpected happens on the trail, you reach someone who knows the area. We are also an official partner of the Rota Vicentina Association, working directly with the organisation that maintains and develops the trail network.

You also benefit from full English-language support at every stage of your trip, from planning to the final day.

Rota Vicentina Hiking FAQ — Everything You Need to Know

What is the best time of year for Rota Vicentina hiking? Spring (March to June) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons. The trails are walkable year-round, but July and August bring intense heat, crowded paths and accommodation that books out weeks in advance. March and April are exceptional for wildflowers on the cliffs.

How fit do I need to be to walk the Rota Vicentina? It depends on the route. The Fishermen’s Trail requires good general fitness but no technical skills. The Serra to Coast, starting at altitude in the mountains above the Algarve, is more demanding. We recommend building up to 15 to 20 km walks before you go, whatever route you choose.

Can I hike just part of the Rota Vicentina? Yes. We build tailor-made itineraries from any starting point — 5 days, 8 days, 12 days, depending on your time and fitness. The Algarve section of the Fishermen’s Trail from Odeceixe to Lagos is a popular choice for a first experience.

What is the difference between the Fishermen’s Trail, the Historical Way and the Serra to Coast? The Fishermen’s Trail is the iconic coastal route, 226.5 km along the Atlantic from Porto Covo to Lagos. The Historical Way crosses the rural hinterland through traditional villages and cork forests. The Serra to Coast is an exclusive itinerary designed by Pura Evasão that starts in the mountains above the Algarve and descends to the Vicentine coast.

Is luggage transfer available? Yes, as an optional add-on on the Fishermen’s Trail. Your bags travel ahead to the next guesthouse while you walk with a light daypack. Contact us for availability on other routes.

Can I walk the Rota Vicentina alone? Absolutely. Our self-guided packages are well suited to solo travellers. The trails are clearly waymarked throughout. You walk at your own pace with a full roadbook, GPS tracks and our local team available whenever you need us.
